If there's one thing that the Romans are famous for, other than creating a vast empire, it has got to be the stunning mosaics that they created to decorate the floors of their town houses, villas and palaces!
 
Mosaics are pictures and patterns made up of tiny little pieces of different coloured materials called "tesserae" (pronounced: tess-er-i). Tesserae were made of stone and ceramic, but glass and metal could also by used to achieve the right colour.
